Background - Brown/Sarkozy initiative

All eyes on the 2010 World Cup – the impetus for school development in Africa
In the summer of 2010 the eyes of the world will be on the World Cup in South Africa. Across five continents, millions of people will follow the drama and excitement of football at its best. Simultaneously, a spotlight will be shining on the host continent Africa, which although full of beauty and rich culture, has mass education deprivation.

There are currently 33 million children in Africa with no school to go to and no teachers to teach them. This statistic is at the root of Gordon Brown and Nicolas Sarkozy’s shared commitment to get 16 million African children into education by 2010, the year that South Africa hosts the World Cup, and every child by 2015.

Supporting the Brown/Sarkozy promise
Given the strong connection with football and to ensure the right expertise for this large scale challenge, The Football Association has offered its support to Piscari EcoBuild’s ACE scheme , and the English game’s governing body is committed to using the power of football to build a better future.

Piscari EcoBuild is proud to be working with The FA and The FA Chairman Lord Triesman, formerly Foreign & Commonwealth Office Minister for Africa, to deliver millions of children in Africa with high quality education rapidly, and in a cost-effective and environmentally friendly way.

33 million children in Africa have no school to go to. Together, we can rapidly reduce this statistic.
